Siddharth Memorial Debate
Siddharth Memorial Debate is one of the oldest events held at Blisspoint. Instituted in the
memory of one of the star debaters of our college, the Siddharth Memorial Debate
continues to attract participation from some of India’s best debaters.
The Siddharth Memorial Debate will be held in two rounds.
Round 1 - Conventional Debate
Round 2 - Parliamentary Debate
RULES AND REGULATIONS :
1. There is a team cap of 50 teams, with 2 members in each team.
2. All participants must be pursuing their Graduation.
3. Cross teams are allowed.
4. 6 best teams will break into the second round.
5. Topic for the Conventional will be released one week prior to the event.
6. The Parliamentary Debate Round will have Power Matchups - Team 1 vs. Team 6, Team 2 vs. Team 5 and Team 3 vs Team 4.
The teams will be given 3 motions. With the toss of a coin, teams will decide to either propose or oppose the motions.
The opposition team will first strike out a motion, then the proposing team will cut the motion they don't want to debate and the left motion will be debated.
Teams will get 20 minutes preparation time. The speaking time will be 5 minutes for the first speakers and 4 minutes for the second speakers + 20 seconds to wrap up after which the teams will be drowned out.
The proposition's first speaker will come and logically lay down his arguments in favour of the motion. The first opposition speaker will rebut him and give his principles. This will be followed by defense and further clarification of arguments in their second speeches. No new matter (in terms of a completely new line of argument) is allowed in the second speeches. In the middle of a speaker's speech, Point of Information (POI), which is a short question in not more than one line can be asked, if your request by the raising of a hand is accepted by the speaker. The speaker has the right to not take any question if he wants. Taking and answering questions, is however a sign of confidence and will only improve your scores if you answer the opposing team well enough.
The two best teams will again have a debate in the same format, which will decide the winner of the Siddharth Memorial Debate.
